What explains differences in firms' abilities to acquire competitve capabiltieis? In this paper we propose thawt a firm's embeddednes in a network of ties is an imporant source of variaiton in the acquisition of competitive capabilities. We argue that firms in geographical clusters that maintain networks rich in bridging ties and sustain ties to regional institutions are wellpositioned to access new information, ideas, and opportunities. Hypotheses based on these ideas were tested on a stratified random sample of 227 job shop manufactures located in the Midwest United States. Data were gathered using a mailed questionnaire. Results from structural equation modeling broadly support the embeddedness hypotheses and suggest a number of insight about the link between firms' networks and the acquisition of competitive capabilities.

On-line marketplaces raise several interesting issues, among them the relevance of location when content is digitized, and the assessment of a supplier's capabilities when buyers worldwide only have electronic contact with sellers. In global B2B on-line marketplaces, market microstructures, i.e. which firms compete for the same customers, are thus likely to be influenced by how customers value location and firm capabilities in their decisions to do business with different suppliers on-line.

This paper introudces the imporant role of networks of interfirm ties in examining fundamental issues in strategy research. Prior research has primarily viewed firms as autojnomous entities striving for competitive advantage from either external industry sources or from internal resources and capabilties. However, the networks of relationships in which firms are embedded profoundly infleunce their conduct and performance. We identify ive key areas of straegy research in which there is potential for incorporating strategic networks: (1) industry structure, (2) positioning within an industry, (3) inimitable firm resources and capabilities, (4) contracting and coordination costs, and (5) dynamic network constraints and benefits. For each of these issues, the paper outlines some important insights that results from consdiering the role of strategic networks.
